Health tips

Simple habits that look after your teeth and gums between visits.

  • Use a soft-bristled brush and a fluoride toothpaste. Brush last thing at night and once more during the day, covering every surface of every tooth. Spit out the toothpaste but avoid rinsing straight away, so the fluoride stays on your teeth.

  • A toothbrush cannot reach the gaps. Floss or interdental brushes remove plaque from between the teeth, where cavities and gum disease often begin. Ask us which size suits you.

  • How often sugar reaches your teeth matters as much as how much. Frequent snacks and sipped sweet drinks keep teeth under acid attack through the day. Water between meals is the safest choice.

  • Replace it sooner if the bristles splay out, and after an illness. A worn brush cleans less well and can irritate the gums.

  • Bleeding gums, a loose tooth, sensitivity that lingers or a swelling that does not settle should be examined. Many dental problems cause no pain in their early stages.

  • How often you need one depends on your teeth and gums. Your dentist will suggest a schedule that fits you; for many people this is every six months.

This is general information for awareness. It is not a substitute for an examination or personal dental advice.
